Description of the event

ETLab researchers took part in the JARA-ENERGY Summer School “AI 4 Energy”, held from 5 to 9 October 2026 in Heidberg / Eupen, Germany and Belgium’s neighbouring region. The five-day programme brought together early-career researchers to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can contribute to the development, operation and optimization of modern energy systems.

For the ETLab team, the experience was much more than a traditional summer school. It was an opportunity to explore new research directions, work with unfamiliar tools, exchange ideas with researchers from different backgrounds and discover how AI can be applied to real-world challenges in electrical energy systems. The combination of expert lectures, hands-on workshops, collaborative problem-solving and research visits made the experience particularly valuable.

A special achievement: third place in the hackathon! Despite this being the team’s first experience implementing an AI-based solution, ETLab’s participants secured third place in the summer school’s hackathon. The result represents an encouraging milestone and demonstrates the value of curiosity, teamwork and the willingness to explore new technologies beyond one’s usual research field.

The hackathon offered participants the opportunity to put the concepts introduced during the summer school into practice, work collaboratively on a technical challenge and develop and present a solution. For the ETLab team, it was a first hands-on step into AI implementation, connecting newly acquired knowledge with the practical challenges of energy systems. Achieving third place made the experience even more rewarding and reinforced the team’s motivation to continue exploring the potential of AI in power system research.

Beyond the workshops and hackathon, one of the most memorable aspects of the week was the opportunity to visit two leading European research environments: Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University. These visits offered a valuable perspective on the research infrastructure, computing capabilities and scientific work supporting advances in energy, digitalization and AI.

A particular highlight was the visit to the supercomputing facilities at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Seeing this infrastructure firsthand was truly an eye-opening experience, providing a concrete understanding of the scale of computational resources available to researchers and their potential to address complex scientific and engineering problems. It was a powerful reminder of how high-performance computing, advanced algorithms and energy research can come together to tackle challenges that would otherwise be difficult to solve.

The visit to Jülich was a real eye-opener, while the visit to RWTH Aachen offered further insight into the research and innovation ecosystem driving the energy transition. Together, these experiences helped connect the theoretical concepts discussed during the summer school with the laboratories, computing infrastructure and research activities where new ideas are developed and tested.

The summer school covered a broad range of topics, including machine learning, data-driven methods, forecasting, optimization, power grids, energy management, battery storage, smart buildings and industrial energy systems. These themes are increasingly relevant to the development of intelligent and flexible electricity networks, where data-driven tools can complement conventional engineering methods and support more informed operational and planning decisions.

For ETLab, the experience also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Combining expertise in electrical engineering and power systems with emerging AI techniques opens new opportunities for research into smart grids, renewable energy integration, flexibility management and the optimization of increasingly complex energy systems.

The JARA-ENERGY Summer School 2026 was an outstanding learning experience, combining new technical knowledge, practical experimentation, international exchange and direct exposure to world-class research facilities. From implementing AI for the first time to achieving third place in the hackathon and discovering the scale of research infrastructure at Jülich and Aachen, the week offered valuable insights and new inspiration for future research.

ETLab congratulates all team members who contributed to the hackathon achievement and thanks the organizers, lecturers, researchers and fellow participants for making this experience so enriching. The summer school strengthened the team’s enthusiasm for exploring the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, electrical energy systems and smart grids, while opening new perspectives for future research and collaboration.
