Description of the event

ICHQP 2026 Dresden

Katherine Mariana Andrade Acosta, ETLAB researcher, participated in the International Conference on Harmonics and Quality of Power (ICHQP) 2026, held in Dresden, Germany, where she presented the scientific paper entitled “Harmonic Analysis of an Industrial Green Ammonia Plant Supplied by Large-Scale Electrolyzers”.

The contribution addresses the important topic of power quality in large industrial plants characterised by a significant presence of non-linear loads, with particular reference to a large-scale green ammonia production facility in Norway. The study was carried out during the FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) phase of the project and focuses on the impact of large-scale electrolyzers and their associated power supply systems on the electrical network.

Large-scale electrolyzers represent one of the emerging challenges for power quality in highly electrified industrial facilities. The transformer rectifier units supplying these systems are significant non-linear loads, capable of generating harmonic components and interacting with the network impedance, potentially increasing the risk of harmonic distortion and resonance phenomena.

The analysis presented in the paper evaluates harmonic distortion levels and potential resonance risks under different operating conditions, including a particularly critical worst-case scenario. By considering different system configurations and operating conditions, the study assesses the behaviour of the electrical system and verifies compliance with the applicable harmonic limits.

The results confirm compliance with the relevant power quality requirements and highlight the importance of performing detailed harmonic studies during the early stages of project development. This aspect is becoming increasingly important in the context of the energy transition, where the integration of large power converters, electrolyzers and other power-electronics-based technologies is significantly changing the behaviour of industrial electrical systems.

The work was carried out with the valuable contribution and collaboration of Prof. Alessandro Bosisio, co-author of the study, and with the continuous technical and scientific support of Paolo Marini. Special thanks also go to Tecnimont for supporting technical excellence and innovation in engineering.

Participation in ICHQP 2026 represented an important opportunity to engage with the international scientific community working in the field of harmonics and power quality. The conference brought together researchers, professionals and industry representatives, promoting the exchange of knowledge and discussion on the new challenges associated with increasing electrification and the widespread adoption of power-electronic technologies in modern electrical systems.

The participation of Katherine Mariana Andrade Acosta in this important international event reflects ETLAB’s commitment to developing and promoting research activities on topics of significant relevance to modern electrical systems, including power quality, the integration of power-electronic technologies and the electrification of industrial processes.

ETLAB congratulates Katherine Mariana Andrade Acosta on the presentation of her work at ICHQP 2026, as well as all the co-authors and collaborators involved. This experience represents an important opportunity for scientific exchange and further demonstrates the value of collaboration between academia and industry in developing innovative solutions for increasingly sustainable, efficient and reliable electrical systems.
