Description of the event

The XI Edition of the UNISA Summer School on Smart Grids will take place from July 6 to July 9, 2026, bringing together PhD students, young researchers, internationally recognized academics and industry experts working on the future of modern power systems.

The official theme of this year’s edition, announced by Professor Vito Calderaro, is “Resilient and Affordable Electricity to Meet Electrification and the AI-Fuelled Demand Challenges”. The Summer School will focus on the impact of artificial intelligence, large-scale electrification and increasing energy demand on the resilience, stability and affordability of electrical power systems and smart grid infrastructures.

The program includes keynote lectures delivered by internationally renowned experts in the field of electric power systems and smart energy networks, including George Gross (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Gianfranco Chicco (Politecnico di Torino) and Pierluigi Mancarella (University of Melbourne).

The initiative is organized in collaboration with the Mediterranean Academy for Energy & Sustainability (MAES) and will feature technical contributions from major national and European energy stakeholders, including TERNA, RTE, ENELMED-TSO and ENTSO-E.

The Summer School is limited to a maximum of 40 participants and represents an important international opportunity for scientific exchange, advanced education and collaboration in the areas of smart grids, energy transition and resilient electrical infrastructures.
